Great voices at the Scala

Maria Callas
Opera has no limits. Everywhere in the world, you can find someone who knows, and can maybe even hum, "La donna č mobile" or "Nessun dorma".

This is why opera is a true pop genre. Although theatre may seem like a rite reserved only for the rich or mad, in reality it should be seen as a moment of enthusiasm, passion, even something to be cheered! We chose our top 5 young operatic voices. What is their relationship with the temple of opera, the Scala of Milan? When have they sung, or, more importantly, when will they sing? Some of them came out of the Scala of Milan. On 7 December 2009, for the inauguration of the season, the Milanese theatre staged Bizet's Carmen, featuring Jonas Kauffmann and the mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili. In July 2010, however, it was the turn of Juan Diego Flórez, the king of Rossinian singing, who was directed at the Scala as the Count of Almaviva in the Barber of Seville. And in October, we shall see the Mexican-French tenor Roland Villazón for Donizetti's Elixir of Love. The situation is more controversial for Anna Netrebko. Although praised to the skies in other countries, she is perceived with diffidence by the more demanding Milan public, and this diffidence has kept her far from Milan for now. Will she succeed in overcoming the gallery's ostracism?

Great voices at the Scala

"Those days were a constant party. You just had to leave the house and cross the street...", wrote Cesare Pavese in La bella estate. To paraphrase him, it is almost like those days. Party there is, and it is closer than we think, because this year there are hundreds of those events which the Commune of Milan has organized for those staying in the city during the summer period. There is something for everyone, as always: shows, concerts, dances and sports events.
